In 1889 kroont prins Alexander Obrenović zichzelf in Belgrado tot koning van Servië. Hij haalt zijn vader direct uit ballingschap en benoemt hem tot opperbevelhebber van het leger. Velen zijn het daar niet mee eens en al snel wordt er een aanslag gepleegd op Alexanders vader. De koning is woest en regeert het land met harde hand.
De jaren strijken voorbij en koning Alexander blijft kinderloos. Om zijn familie toch aan de macht te houden bedenkt de dictator een sluw plan. Hij past de grondwet zo aan dat zijn zwager de nieuwe koning zal worden. Dat is de druppel voor de oppositie, en ze openen een ware klopjacht op de koning. Alexander moet meteen vluchten!
