In de schitterende stad Stendal wordt in 1717 Johann Winckelmann, de vader van de klassieke archeologie, geboren. Van kinds af aan is hij gefascineerd door kunst en archeologie. Na een aantal jaar studeren gaat Johann voor graaf Heinrich werken. Tijdens een van de opgravingen gaat het mis. De jonge archeoloog ontvreemdt stiekem een waardevol object. Graaf Heinrich ziet dit als verraad en stuurt Johann weg. Maar dat is nog niet alles…
De graaf is woest en vastbesloten Johanns reputatie te ruïneren. Johann vreest niet alleen voor het verlies van zijn baan en zijn goede naam, maar vooral voor zijn vrijheid. Tijdens zijn opgravingen heeft hij ooit iets gehoord over een geheime uitgang. Dat zou hem nu goed van pas komen! Kan de archeoloog de geheime uitgang ongezien vinden?
