Ludwig III, geboren in 1845 in München, had geen enkele ambitie om de troon te bestijgen. Waarom zou hij koning van Beieren willen worden? Hij was veel meer geïnteresseerd in landbouw, transport en kunst. Toch moest hij, tegen zijn zin in, het stokje van zijn overleden vader overnemen.
Regeren zat Ludwig III niet in het bloed, en tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog probeerde hij zich dan ook zoveel mogelijk afzijdig te houden. Dat lukte aardig, tot het volk in opstand kwam tegen het koningshuis en de elite. Toen Ludwig III doorkreeg dat de communisten hem wilden afzetten en gevangennemen, wilde hij de stad zo snel mogelijk verlaten. Maar hoe? Zijn hofhouding had ooit iets laten vallen over de geheime uitgang van München. Die zou hij nu goed kunnen gebruiken!
