Camille Pernon was rond 1800 een beroemde zijdewever en handelaar in Lyon. De rijke inwoners van de stad waren groot fan van hem en kochten massaal prachtige zijde en brokaat in. De goede verhalen over Camilles handelswaar bereikten ook Napoleon. Toen de keizer in 1806 naar Lyon kwam kon een bezoekje aan het atelier van Camille dan ook niet ontbreken.
Napoleon plaatste een mega bestelling aan zijdestoffen voor zijn keizerlijke paleizen. “De kleuren blijven wel honderden jaren helder en fris”, had Camille gezegd. De keizer was dan ook woest toen hij erachter kwam dat de kleurpigmenten al na korte tijd verbleekten. De zijdewever moest maken dat hij wegkwam uit Lyon.
