In de vroege ochtend van 5 september 1786 sluipt Herman Willem Daendels door de straten van Hattem. Bij elke hoek van de straat stopt hij even om te kijken of er soldaten patrouilleren. De afgelopen dagen is het erg onrustig geweest in de Hanzestad. Herman heeft de grootste moeite met de besluiten van stadhouder Willem V en laat dat ook duidelijk merken. Maar dat had hij beter niet kunnen doen...
De stadhouder, ook wel De Prins genoemd, is de onruststoker zo zat dat hij generaal Spengler en zijn troepen naar Hattem heeft gestuurd. Zonder al te veel moeite veroverde de generaal de stad. En nu heeft hij het gemunt op Herman. Herman moet maken dat hij wegkomt. Gelukkig heeft de herriemaker weleens gehoord van de geheime uitgang van Hattem. Maar waar kan hij die vinden? Met een boekje vol aanwijzingen gaat hij op pad. Lukt het Herman om uit handen te blijven van de generaal?
