It’s a warm summer evening in Aachen in 792, and Pepin is basking in the last rays of the afternoon sun. With the birth of his half-brother, the illegitimate son of Emperor Charlemagne can kiss any claim to the throne goodbye – and he’s not exactly thrilled about that. Time to take action. Time for a coup on his father’s empire!
Years of careful preparation have led to this moment, and Pepin is ready. Together with Johann and Ludwig, two disgruntled noblemen, he has rallied a ragtag army of emaciated but determined citizens to lead the charge. But wait – what’s this? No! They have been betrayed. Pepin sees his grand plan go up in smoke – and the gallows looming on the horizon. The three men flee through the streets of Aachen in blind panic, desperate to find the secret exit.
